Karragarra
Island
Breathtaking Karragarra Island is only about 0.5 km wide and 2.5km
long with a population of around 124.
Karragarra
island is the closest port to Redland Bay, taking approximately
12 minutes by water taxi.
The best white sandy beaches on any of the four bay islands are
on Karragarra Island and a protected swimming pool near the jetty
make the island popular for day-trippers both from the mainland
and other islands.
There
are free bbqs on the beach, picnic tables, fresh water showers
and shady trees.
There are no shops - all food and other provisions must be brought
from the mainland or the larger islands.
Every thing is in easy reach from the jetty.
Karragarra Island is the perfect place for people who want to
get away from it all and relax in a pristine environment.
Karragarra Island will not suit everyone, but is perfect if you
are looking for a peaceful quiet and beautiful getaway.
The
Island is extremely quiet and peaceful with few cars and most
of the noise coming from the local wildlife.
However, it takes one minute by water taxi to get to Macleay Island
if you need shops or clubs and 12 minutes to get to Redland Bay
where a bus will meet the water taxis and take to you Koala Park,
Cleveland or to the train station where you can jump on to go
to the city.
Lamb
Island
Magical
Lamb Island does have a shop.
The
jetty store not only provides all of your grocery needs and fuel,
but also serves great takeaway or sit in meals.
Some
of the most breathtaking views that you will see are to be had
from Lamb Island.
The
population is approximately 360 people, so it is again, a lovely,
quiet Island but with the advantage of a local store.
Lamb
also boasts a bowls club, tennis courts, and library.
There
are many spots to put your boat in the water on this lovely island.
Boating is a full time recreation for many of the Island residents
Karragarra,
Lamb, Russell & Macleay Islands are well serviced by high-speed
catamarans and vehicular barges.
The 120 passenger ferries take 12 minutes from Redland bay to
Karragarra from Wynnum Creek Marina at Banana Street Redland Bay.
MACLEAY
ISLAND
Macleay
Island is the heavily populated of the four Bay Islands and has
a thriving business and social community with well over 2000 people
living here.
Macleay
Island has a second smaller island - Perulpa Island attached to
it by a causeway..
There
is a beautiful white sandy beach at the northern end of the Island
where you can relax and have a barbecue at the provided facilities
and enjoy the beautiful Island weather.
There
is a Golf Club and the well known Macleay Island Bowls Club has
the most beautiful water views of any
Bowls
Club anywhere!
The
Blue Parrot Restaurant provides wonderful breakfast lunch and
dinners.
The
Beautiful Bay Islands
Living
on the Bay Islands is like stepping back in time.
Children
ride their bikes up and down the Street, Mothers come out at dinner
time and try to round up their children from among all the neighbors'
kids and get them cleaned up from their adventures before tea.
Cubby houses are built on spare blocks of land or on the water
front.
Kids play cricket in the Street. Locals know to drive slow and
look out for children's toys, bikes and skateboards.
Neighbors send their children or husbands to the neighbors for
that one missing item for dinner.
People
lean over the fence and have a chat. A neighbor goes to borrow
a cup of milk to make a cup of tea and comes home an hour later
after having tea and biccies next door as well.
Cars pull over when they see someone walking with parcels and
offer a lift. You never have to walk anywhere in the rain, some
one will come along and pick you up.
People greet each other by name, help each other up the jetty
with heavy parcels and yell out 'to come over for a cuppa when
you come back from the mainland'.
When you walk into the shops and clubs you know the staff by name
and they know you. If someone new is seen near your home, you
get a phone call to make sure everything is alright.
If worst happens and you have to be taken off the islands somewhere
in a hurry you will come home to your washing brought in and the
lawns mowed.
You can always ring someone to: move the car, turn off the iron,
feed the cat/dog/budgie/guinea pig, check the house.
You leave the keys to your car/house somewhere where your friends
can find them if they need to borrow something.
There are always invitations to bbqs, parties, dinners.
If some one in the community needs help, the locals get together
and sort it out.
Peoples pastimes are fishing, boating, gardening, walking, canoeing,
kayaking, surf skiing and out door activities.
The demand for the 'right brand name' clothing doesn't seem to
matter so much here.
Nor does television or computer games - there is too much more
to do.
We see dolphins, dugongs, eagles, galahs, kookaburras, curlew's,
fish and assorted birdlife galore. We are surrounded by natural
beauty - trees and wildlife not concrete.
Living on the Bay Islands is like living a million miles from
civilization in a small country town, but with all of the bonuses
of being under an hour from a major city! Where else in Australia
could we find such an amazing place?
